KANAS INVESTS IN NORTH FORK HEALTH

GREENPORT, N.Y.  December 21, 2007 ----   The Kanas Family Foundation today announced a gift of $2 million dollars to Eastern Long Island Hospital (ELIH). “Eastern Long Island Hospital is essential to the communities of the North Fork and Shelter Island,” states John A. Kanas.  “These communities have supported the Hospital financially for 102 years, keeping quality health care local.  Today, Elaine and I and our family recognize and acknowledge each and every donor, his/her intention, and the continued delivery of excellence in patient care,” adds Kanas.

These funds have been allocated to the ELIH Foundation for its Second Century Campaign, more specifically-- the acquisition of a new MRI.  The Second Century Campaign is a $5-million-dollar, capital campaign focused on four initiatives—Digital Imaging; Surgical Enhancements, Patient Care Environment; and Infrastructure Preservation.

“The Kanas Family’s generosity leads the ELIH Foundation and the $5-million-dollar Second Century Campaign into its final leg,” explain Foundation Co-Chairmen—Z Micah Kaplan, MD and Thomas B. Doolan.   “We accept the challenge to raise the remaining $2 million to reach our goal and complete the Second Century Campaign.  The responsibility of stewardship of a gift of this magnitude is fully recognized by the Board.” “The Kanas Family brings new meaning to the word ‘gift’ for me personally,” states Thomas E. Murray, Chairman, Board of Trustees, ELIH.  “This is a tribute to the community as much as it is a challenge to others.  I am grateful for the vote of confidence it represents,” Murray candidly adds.

“Keeping pace with new technologies includes investing in today’s needs while planning for tomorrow’s ‘cost of caring’,” remarks Paul J. Connor III, President and CEO, ELIH. Every donation received by the ELIH Foundation is targeted for specific capital projects benefiting patients, neighbors and friends.  Already $1 million dollars has been raised by the community for this capital Campaign.  As the first focus of this campaign, approximately $600,000 of the $1 million raised has been invested in the Surgical Initiative—providing equipment and technologies for general surgery, urology, vascular surgery, endoscopy, and expanding anesthesia, giving the operating room both greater capacity and the ability to accommodate more complex surgical procedures.

Notably, in a five year period, inpatient surgeries have increased 61 percent and ambulatory surgery (same day surgery) has increased 240 percent. At present, the Campaign is only $200,000 shy of its $450,000 goal for the Digital Mammography unit, which is expected to be operational by February 2008. “Technology is the key to maintaining quality care for future generations on the North Fork and Shelter Island,” notes Dr. Kaplan.  This $2 million-dollar gift from the Kanas Family brings Eastern Long Island Hospital a NEW 1.5 tesla MRI, with the finest diagnostic capability available.”

ELIH FOUNDATION LAUNCHES SECOND CENTURY CAMPAIGN

Ensuring the quality of healthcare for future generations and furthering the mission of Eastern Long Island Hospital, the Board of Trustees at Eastern Long Island Hospital announces the establishment of the ELIH Foundation co-chaired by Thomas B. Doolan and Z. Micah Kaplan, MD. “Maintaining quality care today while planning for tomorrow’s advancing technology is essential for my family and yours,” states Dr. Kaplan. “Technology now changes at such a rapid pace that it will take all of us working together today preparing for tomorrow’s new developments, in order to ensure every medical advantage is available close to home,” adds Tom Doolan.

The first priority of the foundation is to launch the Second Century Campaign with a $5 million goal, which reflects pressing capital needs and is aimed at securing funds for (4) four initiatives – Digital Imaging, Surgical Program; Patient Care Units; and Infrastructure Preservation.

Joining Tom and Micah on the Foundation Board are Lillian Sheldon-Schneider, Treasurer; Vickie DeFriest, Secretary; Scott V. Bennett, Paul J. Connor III, Robert T. Goldman, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. and James H. Rich, Jr. Thomas B. Doolan is past President and CEO of Eastern Long Island Hospital. He previously served as interim President at Southampton Hospital and retired most recently from his position as President of Peconic Health Corporation. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Peconic Landing. Z. Micah Kaplan, MD, formerly President of the Medical Staff at ELIH retired from his active Internal Medicine practice in Greenport in 1999. Dr. Kaplan has since served as Chairman of Operation: Emergency Expansion, a $2 million project to rebuild the Emergency Department at Eastern Long Island Hospital, completed in January of 2005.
