Are you looking to give back to your community? If the answer is yes, ELIH is for you!
Bill Thompson of Southold answered “yes” to these questions and his experience has exceeded his expectations. Volunteering a few shifts a week at ELIH has filled Bill’s winter with plenty of activity and is very rewarding. If you ask Bill what a typical week at ELIH is like, he answers with enthusiasm, “I come to the hospital anywhere from 2-3 days a week, sometimes for 3½ hours at a time, other days a little longer.”
“The positive energy of the talented staff is inspiring. I enjoy being around people and feel as though I am making a difference,” says Bill. “I get back much more than I give.”
Bill embarked on a two week training under the direction of Toni DeMeo, Volunteer Services Chair, ELIH Auxiliary. And today, Bill assists the team with bedside tasks in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit, one of the busiest areas of the hospital, as well as patient transport, chart preparation and document shredding.
What brought Bill Thompson to ELIH?
He read an article in this the hospital newsletter showcasing the Auxiliary and the opportunity to work seasonally. He jumped at the chance since his “in-season” activity includes working at the local organic market, Sang Lee.
Meanwhile, he is occupying his time where he is most needed in the winter months – his community hospital.
“The ELIH Auxiliary is a great organization,” shares Toni DeMeo. Our volunteers save our community hospital money everyday and bring our community together”.
