MORE LOCAL BLOOD DRIVES

Support your community Hospital, use Group # 10884 whenever you donate, wherever you donate. ELIH receives financial credit for every pint donated with this group number. Donating blood is literally giving the gift of life.  There is simply no substitute for voluntarily donated blood. Without volunteer donors, our community would not have an adequate community blood supply. Blood donation is important to the health of your community. Hospitals need to maintain an adequate blood supply for everyday emergencies, for patients undergoing surgery and patients with cancer.

Each pint of donated blood can help save the lives of up to five people.

NOTE: Donors must be between the ages of 17 and 76, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health. You are eligible to donate every 56 days. If in doubt about medical eligibility, call 1-800-688-0900. Photo or signature identification is required at time of donation as is knowledge of Social Security, Passport or Visa Number.

DONATE TODAY AND RECEIVE A $5 GIFT CERTIFICATE

All blood donors will receive a five-dollar gift certificate to the Hospital’s Corner Gift Shop or the Green House Grill.  The ELIH Blood Drive is supported by the Medical Staff.

Blood donation is important to the health of your community.  Hospitals need to maintain an adequate blood supply for everyday emergencies, for patients undergoing surgery and patients with cancer.  Long Island requires nearly 800 volunteer donations a day to serve patients in 50 local hospitals.

Eastern Long Island Hospital is pleased to announce its status as a SMOKE FREE campus effective July 5, 2011.   Smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on Hospital property.

“Eastern Long Island Hospital is committed to providing the healthiest environment possible for its patients, visitors, and employees,” states Paul J. Connor III, President/CEO.  “This is a collaboration with the Suffolk County Department of Health to reduce tobacco use, which raises risk for multiple diseases. As a healthcare provider, we believe it is our responsibility to promote good health habits and discourage habits that increase health risks.”

It is estimated that more than 126 million nonsmoking Americans continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke in homes, vehicles, workplaces, and public places. Most exposure to tobacco smoke occurs in homes and workplaces. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), almost 60% of U.S. children aged 3–11 years—or almost 22 million children—are exposed to secondhand smoke. The CDC reports that secondhand smoke contains at least 250 known toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer.  Secondhand smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and a number of health conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and respiratory infections, in children.

Besides the health risks, ELIH officials say smoking on hospital grounds raises security concerns and poses a fire hazard.  A smoldering cigarette is a fire hazard because it likely to ignite a flammable material that might be nearby.  In addition, cigarette butts that are discarded on the ground often find their way into waterways and are detrimental to plants and wildlife.

For information on how to stop smoking, call 1-866-NY--QUITS (1-866-697-8487) or go to the New York State Smokers Quitline website for local resources.
