Preservation of Land and Community Health
Eastern Long Island Hospital - Your Partner in Good Health
With a long-standing history of caring for the communities it serves, Eastern Long Island Hospital is pleased to share the beauty of one of nature's open spaces on the North Fork through a cooperative arrangement with Peconic Land Trust and McCall Vineyard and Preserve at its 2011 Gala.
With a vision to improve the health and well-being of the residents it serves, ELIH is delighted to offer guests at this year's Gala, a true educational experience from the viewpoint of conservation and sustainability for future generations.
Today, the preservation of open space on the East End is becoming even more important to the daily lives of our local citizens. Serving the health and well-being of a farming community for well over 100 years, ELIH has been a valuable resource to those "working the land." In turn, ELIH has benefitted from the many natural resources that come from fertile land. Fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers served as the first donations to the hospital's food pantry in the early 1900's.
McCall Vineyard and Preserve recognizes the importance of environmental responsibility and the effects of overdevelopment on the sensitive eco-systems that exist on Long Island. Formerly Downs Farm and Fort Corchaug, the site of the Gala is a nature preserve with a rich history that dates back to our Native American ancestry. McCall Vineyard and Preserve realizes that the land and the well-being of its people are symbiotic by natural design. It was our early settlers who recognized this extraordinary relationship of land and man, but as our nation grew, the focus turned toward development and industrialization.
"As our nation advanced, we largely abandoned firsthand relationships with the land, while spreading the landscape with homes, neighborhoods, commercial development and infrastructure. Now, as undeveloped land becomes scarce in many communities, it has become clear that there are basic human needs that go unmet without open space. In modern times, open space conservation requires active participation by government and citizens to ensure that these needs are met."
– NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

"McCall Vineyard and Preserve is a fine example of how land preservation improves the quality of life in our community through its sustainable farm practices," states Paul J. Connor. "With vines planted on a nature preserve powered by wind energy, Gala guests will have an opportunity to learn about conservation and see it in action. The health and wellness of local families depend on those practices that promote agriculture with clean air and water while balancing nature with the planned development needs of our residents."
EXPERIENCE the benefits of preservation, conservation and responsible agricultural practices. ENJOY the vistas and open space. SAMPLE the bounty of the land.
