Since the early 1900’s, the community has rallied around Eastern Long Island Hospital to ensure quality care close to home.
Thanks to a caring community with vision to establish a hospital east of Mineola, ELIH became Suffolk County’s first voluntary hospital.
Neighbors Caring for Neighbors
Throughout its long history as a rural hospital in a farming community, neighbors have cared for neighbors. Collecting food and cash for patient services was customary.
Dubbed “Annual Donation Day” local farmers went house to house on trucks to pick up donations from their neighbors. Donations included everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to household necessities and canned goods.
