Mammograms

Yearly mammograms and clinical breast exams remain the most effective method for detecting breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stage. According to the National Cancer Institute, women 40 and over should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years. If you have risk factors for breast cancer, such as a family history of the disease, your doctor may recommend more frequent mammograms beginning before age 40.

ELIH continues to make quality film-screen mammography available with high-resolution, low-rad equipment, and anticipates enhancing these services in early 2008 with the addition of a Digital Mammography System, called Hologic Selenia, which features the largest detector available today.

Computer Assisted Diagnosis (CAD) adds a virtual second opinion for every patient, quickly and onsite in addition to the skillful eye of the board certified radiologist team at ELIH.

Digital mammography uses revolutionary imaging technology to provide extremely sharp images for radiologist review. During the mammogram, instead of making a film of the x-ray of the breast, the x-ray energy is captured and converted into a digital image immediately available for diagnosis. This image can be viewed on a high-resolution monitor that enhances visualization of the structure within the breast tissue. The radiologist can manipulate the image in ways not possible before the development of digital technology— adjusting brightness and contrast and zooming in on specific areas to a higher level of detail.

Soft touch… Patient comfort is always a focus at ELIH. NEW, single use, soft foam pads will soon be a ‘soft touch’ cushion between you and the mammography equipment.

Preparation
Do NOT use powder or deodorant the night before or morning of your exam.

Bring previous mammograms.

To achieve the most accurate interpretation (reading), all patients are asked to bring previous mammograms for comparison at the time of the exam

If you are scheduling a diagnostic mammography (not a screening) you also need to bring a physician order (prescription) with you.
