Carol A. Beasley, RN
Laura Goodale Awardee 2011

BEASLEY HONORED FOR CARING

Carol A. Beasley, RN is the recipient of the prestigious Laura Goodale Award for 2011. "Laura Goodale, fondly remembered by local residents as the 'Florence Nightingale' of the North Fork, worked at ELIH for 42 years," states Paul J. Connor, President and CEO. The award was established by the Southold-Greenport Rotary Clubs and lifelong Eastern Long Island Hospital supporter, Carl E. Vail, Sr. over 25 years ago. "The Laura Goodale Award honors a caregiver who personifies the spirit of Laura Goodale, a nurse at ELIH whose caring nature was so extraordinary that her memory still lives on in the hearts and minds of the community," notes Greenport Rotary Club President, Susan Brewster.

Carol who lives in Southold was born at ELIH when the hospital still had its maternity ward qualifying her as a "Stirling Baby"  a name reflective of Greenport's Stirling Harbor given to all babies born at ELIH during the hospital's centennial celebration in 2005. Carol came back to Eastern Long Island Hospital in 1968 to begin her nursing career. She worked the 11 pm “ 7 am shift in the Intensive Care Unit for most of those years and during that time became a proponent of "holistic" nursing.

"Holistic nursing is a mindset that began with Florence Nightingale who believed care should focus on unity, wellness, and the interrelationship of human beings and their environment," states D. Patricia Pispisa, Vice President of Patient Care Services. "Holistic nurses incorporate this philosophy into clinical practice to treat a patient's physiological, psychological, and spiritual needs. Doing so does not negate the validity of conventional medical therapies, but serves to complement, broaden, and enrich the scope of nursing practice and helps patients access their own healing potential. Carol's personal nursing philosophy fits in perfectly with the skill set necessary for intensive care nursing requiring round-the-clock care and close patient monitoring," notes Pispisa. "Carol is a highly valued member of the "care team" and a very deserving Laura Goodale Award recipient," she adds.

Carol will receive the award at The Soundview Restaurant in Greenport on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at a dinner held in her honor hosted by the Southold and Greenport Rotary Clubs. Both clubs will make a joint contribution to the Annual Appeal for Eastern Long Island Hospital as a tribute to Carol for her dedication to the nursing profession and to the health and well-being of the patients she serves. Tickets are $30 and include a full dinner with a choice of entrée. Contact Community Relations, 477-5164 for ticket reservations by May 5, 2011.
